Here is what we did instead: compiled the published manufacturer specifications and cited them, computed the running cost from rated wattage at the real 2026 electricity rate, worked out the heat ceiling from the physics, and named a unit to skip in every roundup. Every number on this site can be checked, because we show where it came from.

A 120 V household circuit caps a continuous load at about 12.5 amps, which is 1,500 watts, which is 5,118 BTU per hour. Every plug-in electric fireplace in the United States hits it — the $180 log set and the $1,800 recessed unit produce the same heat. Which means heat output is never a reason to pay more.

Flame and heater are separate switches on essentially every unit made. Run the flame alone and an entire evening costs about seven cents, against 27.5¢ an hour on full heat. If what you want is a fire to look at on a winter night, the expensive part of owning one is optional — and nobody else in this category publishes that figure.
